Meeting doodles, Windup Space doodles, & Dr. Sketchy’s

Couple random doodles done during various section & unit meetings.

That one kind of reminds me of a fellow I knew back in high school and what he might look like in another decade or two. Maybe. If he’s eating right or something. I don’t know.

This lady was a sign language interpreter at a recent section meeting—it actually looks nothing like her. Three minutes into the drawing someone as tall as a tree sat in front of me. I pretty much had to make up (badly) 75% of the drawing.

One of the speakers at said section meeting. He had a Scottish accent and was a lot more lively than this serene pose indicates.

Last week while dropping off Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore flyers at the Windup Space, I decided to stick around and see the show being set up. Unfortunately, the show was 2 hours away and my phone was dead, so I ended up doodling Russell behind the bar.

The sketch is horrible, but I like the look of it—I might try it again tomorrow night while folks are drawing Paco.

Lastly, an unfinished doodle I did after the Russell doodle—it was cut off by the start of the show.

By the way, if you want to get some cheap life drawing in, and you’re around Baltimore, the next Dr. Sketchy’s is tomorrow night, at the Windup Space with Paco Fish. Doors at 6, start at 7! Whatever you got going on, this is better. Probably. I mean, if it’s your birthday and everyone’s giving you presents, fine. Otherwise, this is better.

Ain’t dead, and a blog you should check out.

I’m not dead (or if I am, no one has informed me that I am)……I’m having scanner issues, but I’ll be getting one for Christmas probably, so that should be resolved soon.

Until then, check out this blog Urban Sketchers, which is a blog of various folks sketches done in urban environments.  Some really amazing stuff.  (I found it through LinesandColors, which as always, is an amazing site in of itself.)

Shadows and faces.

Drew this on Monday sitting at the Blarneystone while talking to various folks….the night was fairly quiet with the exception of the arrival of some girl who started passing out green shriner hats and somehow managed to convince all the men in the bar to wear them.

I wasn’t there for that bit….I had left to visit a bouncer at Max’s for a minute with Goldberg and came back to discover the sedate all-boy-fest-of-pool-players-and-bowling-game-players metamorphosised into a drunk, green-fez wearing riot.

In any case, I doodled an old man while fezzing.

Random doodling.

Some obvious anatomy problems around the waist.  My anatomy just isn’t good enough yet without a model or a muscle chart nearby.

Crappety crap crap.

Well, the studio is setup and I finally started painting.

It’ll be fine, but it’s definitely disheartening. It’s the same damn thing it was with pencil…it took a few weeks for the skills to come back. I’m basically having to relearn how to manipulate the paint…..

Oh well, here’s the first sketch I did to test the paints…….the drawing underneath isn’t that great, which is probably part of the reason I don’t like it. That, and I got impatient and tried to do several layers at once, instead of doing a new layer every two days until the color builds up (which is why I used to work on several paintings at once).

There’s a glare from the flash, but I’m not even going to bother to get a better picture since the whole point of this was to test the paints and “christen” the studio.

Sketch paintings.

Well, the studio took a little bit longer than I thought (as did today’s other responsibilities), but I did get some work done, specifically making room in the “almost-done” studio to stash the canvases that are leaning against everything in sight.

So, no work done today, but at least I’m not tripping over crap anymore.

Anyways, I did find an oil sketch that I had forgotten existed….

…and we’re on. A post about movie theaters, books, and studios.

Well, my plan for lining up a bunch of posts to “auto-post” while I was busy doing holiday things didn’t work out. Basically, Christmas, a two day birthday party, a trip to DC, and a trip to Asheville pretty much threw a monkey wrench into my one a day schedule.

Well, the last gifts have been given, the tabs paid, and the trains deboarded, so it’s back to work. I haven’t been completely nonproductive though….there’s a couple new sketches, a couple new unearthed sketches, and the studio has about one hour of “set-up” left to go before I can start oil painting in it.

Anyway, that’s what I’m going to go do now since it’s only 3:30 in the afternoon and it’s a beautiful day to prop open the windows and paint.

Here’s a sketch to start off with though…’s a caricature of an employee I used to know at Plaza Theaters, which is by the way the theater that inspired some of the scenes in Melissa Walker’s Violet on the Runway. I’ll put up more sketches of theater employees as I find them (sadly, I’m pretty sure there were none of Melissa).

There’s a screenplay involving the same theater out there somewhere as well…if I can find some links involving it, I’ll throw some in later.

Oh, and the mayonnaise is an old theater joke, one I should remove, but what the hell. *I’m* not the one that kept a drawer in the box filled with mayonnaise soiled napkins and 40 half used mayonnaise packets.

That said, wherever she is, I hope she’s doing well.

Last, over the next 48 hours I intend to add a “random thoughts” blog as well to this site, which will include random links to things I find interesting, or, well, posts on things that really don’t belong here. (Including two promo pages, one for the book I’m trying to sell and one for the second one I started working on last month.)
