Did some more work on the painting this morning, adding several skin tone glazes. I was able to add three coats before the brushwork started to rub off the paint from several days ago, forcing me to stop from now. Hopefully two or three days the glazes will be dry enough to add more glazes on top.
I had forgotten this was why I usually worked on several paintings at once back in college. With nothing else to do, I pulled out an old painting from several years ago, one not finished but one I had been afraid to touch over the last few years since I didn’t consider myself familiar enough with oils anymore to not mess it up. I added a few glazes to it and blocked in a good deal of the background and then quit for the day.
Not much point to doing photos of either yet, so here’s a bunch of decade old doodles that have turned up in the process of committing all my old notes to Evernote.
The first is a dwarf head (an early version of Donth)…
The rest are old pencil sketches scribbled at Cafe Trios when I was a freshman…

Well, I’m back from San Francisco.
While shifting bookcases around yesterday (to make room for some stuff I picked up in SF), I found several more Borjun’s Tavern sketches from back in the day. (Check the Borjun’s Tavern link at the top of the page for more sketches and an explanation of what the Tavern was. I’ll add these photos to that collection sometime in the next couple of days.)
The first is actually okay recent, drawn on a napkin at the Blarneystone several years ago. Basically a couple concept sketches for a monkey, a random patron, and Blitzen, a Nazi reindeer stormtrooper (not one of my characters).
Next is a collection of Trix doodles and concept sketches…I’m guessing that this is at least 15 years old, maybe older.
Next, Cyborg and Sphere concept sketches (once again, not my character) from the same time period (at least it’s the next page in the pad)…
The next two are half-hearted attempts at creating a Borjun’s Tavern comic book. Both are from 15 years ago or so as well, long before I’d even thought of using a computer for this type of thing.
I was obviously also impressed with that Sandman t-shirt of Death drinking a cup of coffee.
If I remember, the above cafe was modelled on Cafe Trios in Chapel Hill as well…

I’m cleaning the house today and unfortunately don’t have anything new to put up. The below is an oil painting I did in my second (third?) year of oil painting underneath Professor Zaborowski at UNC, about a decade ago. It’s a pencil sketch on canvas paper with a layer of oils carefully applied over top. It was probably the best one of it’s type I did that year.
I *think* it was based off a sketch done in a coffee shop named Cafe Trios in Chapel Hill, one that has long since turned into an Italian eatery, then a gin bar, and maybe a sports bar now? I have no idea.
Pulling an old drawing from a college journal today. I did absolutely nothing over the weekend, unless you want to count playing video games . (I was helping someone house-sit this weekend and had access to a gigantic television and a 360.)
Anyways, this is a watercolor detail from the same journal that had the hot-air baloon faerie in it. (I think I drew it sitting in Cafe Trios in Chapel Hill.)
