I ain’t dead, no need to kick in the door.

October?  Really?  That was my last post?

Alright, let me dig around and see what I’ve got to put up here.  Dr. Sketchy’s has been kicking my ass lately, as has travelling and working on the novel.  I’ve been doing a lot of work in Painter, specifically in order to build a website for the novel, but I think I’ll save that for a separate post and just do a generic sketch dump for now.

What do we have….[digging through folders]

Oh, I went to the life drawing session at 11 am on Saturdays at the Creative Alliance.  I was impressed . . . it was relaxed atmosphere and a good time.  I don’t know how often I’ll be able to get up that early on Saturday, but I’ll definitely do it again.

First sketch was crap . . . enough that it made me scribble some of it out . . .

Obviously not the strongest start.

I really liked that last one . . . so much so in fact, that I’m using it as the base for a painting I’m doing in Painter on the tablet, with the end goal of it being an illustration on the novel website.  I’ll show you how far I’ve gotten in that process in a later post though.

Next up, here’s a random doodle I did while some IT guys spent a DECADE installing a piece of software on my work computer that should have taken ten minutes.  I could see what they were doing wrong, but they wouldn’t pay attention to me so I was basically forced to doodle and eavesdrop on their technical chatter until I found a manual to read.

Anyway, here’s the doodle.  For the life of me I couldn’t find a normal pencil and had to use a green one.

The building in the background is sort of one of the buildings downtown that is visible from my window.

Next up, another work doodle, done several days later while waiting for a unit meeting to start.

I’ve been playing with this sketch in Painter as well.  The intention was for it to be the dwarf Donth in the novel, but in my opinion it looks more like Snarf from the Thundercats.  Painter improved that a bit, but in the end I’ll probably end up going with something else . . . over the years I’ve gotten into the bad habit of drawing dwarf noses in a certain way which, while pleasing in a comical sense, doesn’t always lend itself to more serious illustrations.

Before the Jason Webley show tonight I should have an hour or so of downtime at the bar next door, so maybe I’ll have a chance to give it another shot.

Playing with the WACOM and random doodles.

truckdriverBusy, busy, busy, but I have gotten a few sketches done.  I need a new life-drawing class – my schedule is too busy for the seasonal commitment of MICA’s life – drawing class (I end up losing a fair amount of money because I only make it  to half the classes), I refuse to get up at 7 am on a Saturday to make it to the Creative Alliance’s class, and the Charcoal Club has become something akin to a high school lunch cafeteria with all the political infighting that entails), and Towson is just too damn far.  Dr. Sketchy’s would be perfect, but things are usually a little too hectic on our end running the thing to get much drawing in.

Oh, well, something will turn up.

The above doodle was done sitting on a barstool at Windup and then was heavily edited in Corel Painter using the tablet.

Next is a doodle from a section meeting….

Another tablet experimentation… initially I thought the sketch was good enough to play with in Painter, but, eh, it wasn’t.  It was done in bits and pieces during a group meeting at work; I’ve cropped out the boring parts and just included the head which I was fooling around with for a bit.

Next, some rocks doodled with markers and pens while the Daily Show was on…

Ugh, I can do a lot better than that, but oh well, I try to put up the disasters as well.

If I’m able to go to the Renaissance Festival this weekend, I plan to take my pad . . . we’ll see if that happens.

Dwarves, Sketchup, & Photoshop

I’m currently in the process of building a website for a fantasy novel I’ve been working on (I’m editing the last few chapters of it now…of course, I said I was on the last edit two edits ago) and I’ve been fooling around with various sketches for the header.

(That’s not completely true . . . I’m also toying with cover ideas and layouts for a cover, which is kinda silly since I know no publisher would ever let me design the cover, but whatever, it’s fun.)

In any case, the novel is set in a low/nonexistent magic world just beginning to it’s industrial age.  Think top-hats and locomotives.  One of the main characters, Donth, is a dwarf who spends a lot time sitting in various cafes playing chess.

Here are the first two doodles I did on a memo pad at lunch while bored.

Next I found a cafe table and a chess set in Google Sketchup.  (I could draw a table if I want, but I’m just playing and have absolutely no desire to draw a cafe table.  The point wasn’t to create a “piece of art” but to get an idea of how to layout a painting or drawing to be done later.  I still might use the last picture in a header though.  We’ll see.)

Where was I?  Oh, the table….

Next, I lighted the image of the table and then printed it out as large as I could, drew Donth sitting at the table, scanned it back in and used Sketchup to throw a cobbled floor unerneath everything.

I then opened the image in Photoshop, erased the overlap lines, through a graded tint on the whole thing, then used the burn and dodge tools to add some tonal work.

In about a month, I’m hoping to have a Powerbook along with a tablet, which, in theory, should allow me to go a lot further with this sort of thing….working with a mouse is just too damn difficult, not only that, but my computer is so old that Photoshop slows it to a crawl.

Hell, Tweetdeck slows it to a crawl.

At that point (when I get a Mac), I’ll probably revisit this for real instead of just toying with it.

(I don’t quite like the angle…..something doesn’t look right, but I’ve got a bit to figure it out, not to mention what to fill the rest of the space with.)

Painting Update.

painting

Well, it’s slowly still getting somewhere, where, I don’t know.  At least I’ve learned how to paint skin again and are getting better at hair.  There’s still something proportionally wrong with her head….not only that, but the painting’s layout sucks.  There’s simply no room for anything else except her back, and well, it kind of makes it boring unless I go crazy with tattoos or something.

It was just a practice piece though, so I may very well do that, even if it means ruining it.  At the very least I’ll have the technique for the next one, and hopefully the good sense to put some thought into layout before I start slapping paint around.

Backlog vomit.

That’s just a horrible image.  For some reason I’m picturing a hamster, his mouth stuffed with paper, getting back to his house and going “BLARRRRGGGH!!!”

Anyway, I’ve been trying to post all this crap for awhile but have had my time eaten up by either the Dr. Sketchy’s blog, travelling, or drinking/socializing at way too many birthdays/”I quit my job!” parties/”I’m depressed” parties/after parties/”my boss just got fired so I’m going to cheat on my wife with her to make her feel better parties”.

And yes, that last one I just stumbled into the middle of.  It’s not like that was on the invitation or anything.  Yeah, it was weird.

Moving on.

First, a coaster from the Windup Space while Gunwife Gone played their last show ever (some of their folks are moving away to raise bears in Alaska or something).

img082

*I* liked it, but apparently I was the only one at the bar that thought it looked like a bird sitting on some rocks (which is appropriate I guess, since I drew it).

It’s a little easier to see with the blue removed.

img082part2

And no, this was not a product placement for Camel.  Though they’re more than willing to send me money to draw on Camel coasters 24/7 if they wish.

Next up were too absolutely horrible doodles done at Don Sinnish’s birthday party at Artist & Craftsman Supply (he owns it).  Basically it was a lot of people sitting outside the store on a lazy Saturday afternoon drawing, sipping champaigne, and eating chocolate cake.  (Three hundred thousand teenagers, escorted by cops on atvs, went by on dirt bikes at some point.)

img083

img089

That last is the top of the old Dollar Store (?) across the street from Don’s place and almost next door to Windup.  I obviously wasn’t in the mood to draw that day, so I gave up at that point.

Went to NYC for SketchyCon sometime after that . . . got to actually DRAW at a Dr. Sketchy’s, versus running around putting out fires.  Unfortunately, I was much more interested in meeting the other attendees (folks who run other Dr.S’s) than drawing, so all I produced were two pretty lack-luster doodles.  (The models were amazing though.)

img084

Yowsa, what the hell is that?  This is what I was TRYING to draw (left-handed) while having a discussion with someone from Denver?  Asheville?  Houston?  Who knows at this point.  There were a lot of drinks at the session, and at the club afterward.

(BTW, that photo was taken by Katie Laird, who runs Dr. Sketchy’s Houston.)

This is a sketch of Johnny Dallas who was being drawn on with markers.

img085

Next up, some crap from a session of Charcoal Club . . . a couple of them were alright, but I obviously wasn’t in the mood to draw that night either.

img086

img088

img087

Actually, I take some of that “crap” stuff back, I really like the hair on the one above.  The next one came out looking NOTHING like the model though.

img090

Okay, I got bored and was in a horrible seat for the pose the model picked.  (I’m usually too lazy to actually get up an move seats.)  So I tried to remember Spiderman’s costume by memory and made a mess of it (not to mention accidentally putting the spider icon on his left pect instead of the center of his chest).  The reason there’s nothing on the bottom parts of the arms or the legs, or, well, the waist, is, well, I couldn’t remember exactly how the patterns of webbing worked there.

Kind of embarrassing.  Ohs wells.

Last but not least, my sketches from the LAST EVER session of the Charcoal Club.  I’m not going to go into it, but apparently some old folks in charge Kirked-the-fuck-out at the thought of their being two models on the stage at the same time.  Apparently this sent their minds spiraling into the gutter and they canceled the sessions indefinately (and believe me, there was nothing “dirty” about the sessions at all, it just gave all of us more than one person to draw and tended to mean there were no “bad seats” in the room).

In any case, I just find it sad that the OLDEST CONTINUOUS LIFE-DRAWING SESSION IN THE COUNTRY was canceled indefinitely because there was a possibility that the presence of two naked people sitting on a stage (versus just one) might halt the pacemakers of a bunch of old-stick-in-the-muds who don’t care about the sessions anymore because they themselves don’t attend them.

John refused to talk about it, but the folks who showed up to draw were definitely not afraid to give the skinny during the breaks.

Not that I’m going to get into it.  [cough]

Anyway, Katia was the model for the last session.  She was stunning as usual, but I’ll warn you now that the last one is the one that looks the most like her.  Apparently I was all over the place that night, sketch-wise.  You’d think each sketch had been done by a different alter (personality).

img091

Crap, crap, crap.  So I tried harder for the next one.  It came out “interesting”, but certainly not looking like Katia. (I kinda like the tattoos though.)

img092

At this point, I’m furious….”By jove, if this is the last session ever, I’m going to walk out of here with at least one drawing!”   I even pumped and swung my fist in the air when I said “By jove!”

I did.

img093

Now I’m going to have to find a new drawing session.  MICA is great, except for that whole pay ahead of time thing, and Creative Alliance’s is at 9 o’clock in the morning on a Saturday, which I can tell you right now isn’t going to happen.

Alright, well, that’s all the bits of paper my hamster cheeks got.

Dr. Sketchy’s tonight folks!

Yeah, yeah, I know I haven’t put any new stuff up yet, the last week or two has been utter hell, and has no sign of lightening up until at least Thursday.  Maybe I can do some scanning on my lunch break though, who knows….

BUT, busy-busy doesn’t mean bad . . . Dr. Sketchy’s is tonight with LiiLii Lipstick!

7:00 o’clock at Dionysus.  So if you’re looking for something to do on a dreary rainy Monday evening, and drawing the pretty LiiLii while drinking a cold beer sounds like something to do, come join us.

Check the main website for more details….
